Subject: June 12 Update
We
are in Shearwater awaiting good weather to round Ivory
Island and head for Rescue Bay or Kuhtze Bay. We
have strong SE winds at the present time, so everyone
has done their laundry, fueled, or done general
maintenance to ready for the next leg of our trip.
We
left Squirrel Cove with light winds, sunbreaks and
smooth water to transit Yulclata and Dent rapids on
our way to Blind Channel Resort. The group
enjoyed a wonderful German dinner at the restaurant
and prepared for Leg 3 of the race.

Leg
3 was a short race from just north of Blind Channel to
Whirlpool and Green Rapids. The currents were
not as predicted, so the scores were very high for
such a short race. Following the race, the fleet
continued on to Lagoon Cove where Bill and Jean Barber
were there to welcome the fleet. After a few
light rain showers, the group gathered at the shop
building for a crab and prawn feed and enjoyed the
music of the Northward Bound Four (Mike and Billie
Henry and Larry and Colleen Price).
The
next day, the fleet moved on to Sullivan Bay and
prepared for Leg 4 and the trip to Skull Bay.
Waters were flat and calm for the transit to Sullivan
Bay. We actually had lots of sun breaks and
enjoyed some summer weather.
Leg
4 of the AK 1000 was up the mainland coast toward Cape
Caution with an intended stop at Skull Bay and
rounding the cape the next day. This 15 nautical
mile course was completed in flat calm seas. The
seas and wind were so calm, that the fleet decided to
proceed on around Cape Caution and continue on to
Pruth Bay. Some of the veterans said they had
never had such a calm crossing of Queen Charlotte
Sound.

The
fleet spend 3 nights in Pruth Bay and enjoyed a beach
picnic on the West Beach. Everyone had a great
time and enjoyed the hamburgers and smores furnished
by the AK 1000 committee.
Our
next transit was from Pruth Bay to Rescue Bay with Leg
5 part of the day's travels. This was a 15
nautical mile course up Fitz Hugh Sound in flat water
and light southerly winds. The currents fooled a
few racers, but we had some good scores for leg 5.

During
the transit to Rescue Bay, the fleet decided to put
into Shearwater, with the intent to have a day in
Shearwater rather than a lay day in Rescue Bay. The
wind came up this morning and is forecast to
continue for a couple more days, so we are currently
awaiting a good weather report. We will probably
make our next transit to Kuhtze Bay to make up for the
weather.
More
to come the next time we have internet service, which
will probably be when we get to Prince Rupert.
