Alaska 1000 Cruiser Navigation Contest

After a one day weather delay in Nanaimo, the Alaska fleet got underway on Thursday, June 3 on Leg 1 of the Alaska 1000 Capital to Capital predicted navigation contest.  Fifteen boats are competing, with two additional boats accompanying the competitors.

Leg 1, a 21 nautical mile course, began very early on June 2 at Departure Bay, just north of Nanaimo, BC, and ran through calm, flat waters to Winchelsea Islands and Ballenas Islands, before turning for the crossing of the Straits of Georgia.  During the crossing from the Ballenas Islands to Texada Island and the finish point, a strong southwest wind developed to test the navigation skills of the skippers.  All boats completed Leg 1, then continued to Pender Harbour for a well deserved potluck dinner at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club's Garden Bay outstation.

The top 5 competitors after Leg 1 were:

Contestant Navigator Boat Name Club SEC'S
Silvernail, Chuck Price Solmar BYC 1
Timmerman Dick Sylvia Timmerman Vagabond QCYC 69
Klett, Ken Karon Klett Klettitat QCYC 162
Henry, Mike Billie Henry Peachy Keen BYC 165
Cole, Fred Linda Cole MouseTrap POYC 181

Friday, June 4, was Leg 2, a 10 nautical mile course, which began just outside Pender Harbour and continued northwest up Malaspina Strait to Norhteast Point on Texada Island.  Winds were light and the water was smooth for Leg 2, resulting in extremely good scores.  Following the finish of Leg 2, the fleet continued up Malaspina Strait, past Westview and Lund on the BC mainland to Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island in Desolation Sound, where the fleet anchored for the night before continuing on to Blind Channel on West Thurlow Island on Saturday.

The top 5 competitors in Leg 2 were:

Contestant Navigator Boat Name Club SEC'S

Gautschi Bob Audrea Gautschi Sirena AYC 18

On Sunday, June 6, the fleet will move from Blind Channel to Lagoon Cove on East Cracroft Island, which will include the 8-1/2 nautical mile Leg 3 contest.

The Alaska 1000 contest will conclude at Juneau, Alaska on July 2, after beginning on May 28 in Olympia, Washington.  This year's contest replicates the first Capital to Capital race that took place in 1928.
