The Gig Harbor Yacht Club has an active sailboat program that includes both racers and cruisers. Our membership includes many very experienced sailors in both categories. The Gig Harbor Yacht Club sponsors two major sailboat races each year. The Islands Race is part of the Southern Sound Series held each winter, and the Lemans Race is one of the most popular events in this area. The Lemans Race features a unique start, in which boats are at anchor with sails down and the crew below decks. At the start, crews scramble topsides, hoist sails, and race out the mouth of Gig Harbor.

Several lower-key events are held each year, including the Jack and Jill Race in September and the May through August Thursday Evenings, held within the confines of Gig Harbor. All sizes of boats are welcome including windsurfers. These Thursday races are a community event that will be coordinated by GHYC but the individual races may be run by participants.
